Going Global Innovation (Going Global) is a grant provided through Foreign Affairs and International Trade Canada; Going Global provides up to $75 000 to assist Canadian companies, researchers and universities/colleges in finding foreign investors.
Many ventures or technologies at the research stage fail due to a lack of funding. The traditional way of thinking is to first prove a technology or innovation in a domestic market and then export it to foreign markets. However, with regard to attracting investors, in an increasingly globalized world, imagination and innovation cannot be bound by borders. That’s exactly why governments provide funding for commercially promising, early stage technology ventures that are willing to seek out foreign investors.
Eligible expenses under Going Global include: airfare, local transportation, accommodation, meals, translation services, legal fees, participation at targeted exhibitions and even funding for staff/assessments required to apply to other large projects such as the EU Framework.
The objective of Going Global is to promote as well as enhance Canada’s innovation efforts by empowering qualified Canadian projects with the resources required to pursue international R&D collaborative opportunities through the development of partnerships with key players in other countries and economies.
Applications are accepted at anytime throughout the year, but must be made at least 8 weeks prior to the start the project.
The application process is divided into 5 stages.
Stage 1 – Application is reviewed to ensure that it meets eligibility criteria and includes all necessary documentation.
Stage 2 – Proposal is reviewed by Canadian Trade offices throughout the world who asses its viability to attract investors and if necessary, a dialogue is started with the Project Lead to discuss foreign direct investment opportunities.
Stage 3 – Successful applicants are awarded funds and sign a project funding agreement.
Stage 4 and 5 – The Project Lead provides an interim and final project report as per the funding agreement.
Going Global is just one of many funding opportunities available through Export Development Canada and Foreign Affairs and International Trade Canada.
